Lot 620		1794. O-101, Rarity 3. NGC graded AU-55. A hint of classic gunmetal gray tone on both sides with flashes of orange-gold in the devices. The date is well struck with full flowing curls on Liberty and all of the feather detail on the eagle's wings. A popular date and the first year of issue of the half dollar series. Remarkably well preserved as so few of these even survived, and finding one with just a touch of wear like this takes years of patient searching. A prize for the astute numismatist who appreciates quality, rarity and eye appeal. Condition census quality never goes out of style! Only 23,464 struck. Lot 621		1794. Overton-105. Rarity 5. NGC graded VG-10. CAC. Nice even antique gray and gold toning on both sides. This is a much scarcer die marriage than the commonly seen Overton-101 variety. Liberty's hair curls are well formed and many are still showing good separation despite moderate circulation. There's a few residual adjustment marks mostly on the reverse, where excess silver was filed away at the mint prior to striking this important early silver coin. Lot 622		1795. Overton-103, Rarity 5. NGC graded AU-50. Even toning on both sides. This coin is likely the 3rd finest for this variety and tied with just one other at the level. The strike is sharp with full separation on Liberty's curls on the obverse and full wing feathers on the reverse. It is identifiable by a short scratch above ST of STATES on the reverse which confirms this is from the famed Robert P Hilt, II Collection sold by Heritage in 2015. Not only is this one of the finest of the die variety, but its a high grade 1795 half dollar by any measure. Collectors have to search long and hard to find a coin this well preserved of this type. Lot 623		1795. 2 Leaves. Overton-121a, Rarity 6. PCGS graded Good-6 PQ. CAC. Nice old time toning on both sides. This is a rare die state with a heavy die crack up between the 95 in the date to the bust. Clearly the die didn't strike too many more coins once this crack formed and the obverse die was replaced. This coin shows natural antique gold toning on both sides with flashes of silver in the protected areas. Lot 627		1807 O-102, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-63. Nice old time toning of silver gray with russet tinges here and there in the recesses of the design. This is the final year of issue for the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design. Precious few of these survive in Mint State, let alone in Choice grades like this example. Classic light silver-gray with lilac hints in the toning. The surfaces exhibit some luster beneath the toning and are free of all but microscopic signs of handling. The strike is fairly sharp save for the uppermost curls above Liberty's temple. Lot 629		1812/1 Overdate 2 over 1 with Large 8 Overton-101a R5 PCGS XF Details Scratch. A sharply detailed example of this very rare variety but lightly cleaned and there are a couple fine scratches from the neck to star 1. Otherwise this piece is quite nice and mint frost shows in the protected areas on both sides. Medium gray with lighter silvery-gray in the protected areas. A die crack connects the date to most of the stars. A decent example of this very rare variety, the rarest of the year and a prize for Bust Half Dollar specialists. The strike is glorious, with full curls on Liberty, the stars mostly sharp too. For the reverse the eagle's feathers are all bold, and the lettering crisp and sharp. The surfaces are stunning, truly a quantum leap above the typical lower grade seen. Notice the satin freshness of the fields, free of distracting marks, with luster intact and not limited by careless handling over the last nearly 200 years. Lot 640		1827 O-120a, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-67. A lovely mostly untoned gem that is brilliant silver in color with a pale dusting of golden hues. All the devices are well struck, including the central curls on Liberty and all the eagle's feathers. This coin is the finest known of this die variety by two grade points. It was sold in the Kaufman Collection many years ago. The surfaces are as close to perfection as any collector could hope to find. On this die variety, there are numerous die scratches (seen on all coins produced from this die) below Liberty's bust. These are simply a part of the hand made die process, and add to the charm of these historic and popular coins. This example is simply astounding in quality and it would be unimaginable to find any example of this date in higher grade. It would be hard to imagine a more perfect example of this type, with satiny luster and untouched fields and devices in full abundance. A coin of amazing quality and appeal and precious few Capped Bust half dollars earn the Superb MS-67 grade! The presentation here is most elegant, with the delicate small sized date punch used in combination with the smaller letters for the legend on the reverse. The Motto on the scroll is sharp and full, which is a feature seldom seen on Capped Bust half dollars from this era, which normal show a shallow or weak area on the scroll opposite of Liberty's bust. Lot 661		1836. Reeded edge. GR-1, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely gold and blue toning with splendid russet gold accenting the devices. The toning is simply glorious on this important first issue from the new steam coining press finally ready for operation in late 1836. This was a major advancement for the Philadelphia Mint, and the realization of a dream since their opening in 1793. Why is this? Well, the Boulton and Watt coining operation in Birmingham, England developed this steam minting technology in the 1790s and all world was envious. Their machinery eliminated the need for much of the repetitive tasks such as the manual labor required to strike the coins and the horses used to draw the metal bars through the drawing mills. All these tasks could be done by the machinery driven by steam, which produced far more uniform coins and more rapidly than a well staffed mint could produce. So, here is one of the very few surviving 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars that has developed glorious toning over lustrous surfaces. Softly struck in the reverse center as the Philadelphia Mint was still tinkering with the striking pressure when this one was coined. Pop 8; 9 finer at PCGS. Lovely blue and golden toning on both sides, with deeper blue to aqua at the rims, fading to golden russet to silver frost at the centers. The strike is solid and bold, with crisp details throughout. Gorgeous toning as noted, and this early date is the design conceived by Christian Gobrecht. Notice the stars are somewhat small and delicate, and the reverse lettering too is thin and attractive, giving the fields a very open appearance. Lot 665		1841. PCGS graded MS-64. Semi reflective fields. Even light gold and umber toning with hints of sea green hues. The strike is full and complete, but what is astounding here is the quality of the surfaces, which are simply amazing. Lot 666		1842. Medium date. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice old time toning of antique silver gray with deeper russet accents around the peripheral devices. Well struck with sharp definition throughout. It is noteworthy that the surfaces are of fantastic quality, no signs of handling or distracting marks are seen. Here in 1842 the delicate thin date punch of the prior years has been updated and the digits are now thicker, similar with the reverse legends, with taller and thicker letters. These larger letter and date punches gave these coins increased protection from years in circulation, but as seen here, also caused the dies to crack connecting the letters of HALF DOLLAR as often seen from this point on for this series. Lot 668		1855-O. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-66. Well struck. Nice even toning with sea green and lilac colors. Very pretty with luster peeking through from beneath and a bold strike on all the devices. Always in high demand for the Arrows at the date and these popular coins are rarely found so well preserved. The reason for the Arrows at the date is due to a slight reduction in the silver content in the half dollar planchets starting in early 1853. The monetary upheaval was intense in the early 1850s due to the fixed ratio of gold to silver and the sudden discovery of immense gold deposits in California. Thus the price of gold came down a bit, which caused the value of the old silver coins to be worth about $1.07 per dollar of coins! This allowed from profitable export and melting of our silver coins. Hence the amount of silver was slightly reduced to make melting then no longer profitable and these Arrows at the date announced this fact so the hoarders would no longer grab these coins for melting down. Excellent surface quality for this popular New Orleans date, with a sharp strike on the stars and most of Liberty's dress folds. Scarce this nice and quite desirable for this collectible issue.
